This autumn, Wizards of the Coast is steering two big threads at once: the multiverse-spanning climax of the Omenpath saga in Reality Fracture<\/strong>, and the continued expansion of its cross-franchise program, Universes Beyond<\/a><\/strong>. Both moves matter for players and collectors because they reshape gameplay, set expectations for future collaborations, and determine which parts of a franchise make it into Magic cards now \u2014 or are saved for later.<\/p>\n

At Gamescom I spoke with Gavin Verhey, Principal Magic Designer and host of the Good Morning Magic channel, about how Wizards approaches licensed sets like The Hobbit and why some iconic moments were left out of the cards.<\/p>\n

Why The Hobbit landed where it did<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

Wizards\u2019 recent return to Middle-earth felt more like a visit to a classic Magic plane than a straight movie tie\u2011in. Designers leaned into recognizable mechanics while adapting them to Tolkien\u2019s factions: after earlier experiments with Amass<\/strong> variations such as Amass Orcs, The Hobbit introduced an Amass Goblins variant that supports a Goblin Army theme tied to the story\u2019s climactic battles.<\/p>\n

But not every Tolkien element made the cut. The controversial mechanic known among fans as The Ring Tempts You<\/strong> was considered and ultimately left out. Verhey explained the team judged it to be mechanically awkward \u2014 complex to track and marginal in its relevance to The Hobbit narrative \u2014 and therefore poor return on design effort for this set.<\/p>\n

He noted the mechanic could have been shoehorned in as a one-off or a specialty product like Jumpstart, but the work required to make it clear and fun across limited print runs outweighed the benefit.<\/p>\n

How licensing limits shape what appears on cards<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

One consistent principle Verhey described: designers are encouraged to include everything that makes sense for a given set, because future opportunities in that world are never guaranteed. That said, access to an IP\u2019s wider universe can be restricted by contract.<\/p>\n

Examples he gave: the Avatar: The Last Airbender set was built only around the original series \u2014 Korra<\/em> was intentionally excluded \u2014 and The Lord of the Rings product did not draw from The Hobbit because of those property boundaries. By contrast, some collaborations (Final Fantasy, Doctor Who) were commissioned with more expansive franchise access upfront, and Marvel was planned from the beginning as a multi\u2011set project with an agreed distribution of characters and eras.<\/p>\n

Put simply: what designers can include often comes down to legal access as much as design taste.<\/p>\n

  • Designers\u2019 brief:<\/strong> use as much of the source material as you can, but only what you\u2019re allowed to.<\/li>\n

  • Preservation:<\/strong> some elements are deliberately saved for potential future sets.<\/li>\n

  • Franchise planning:<\/strong> when multiple sets are intended (Marvel), cards are allocated across releases in advance.<\/li>\n

    Translating characters into Magic\u2019s rules<\/h2>\n

    <\/p>\n

    One of the trickiest tasks for Universes Beyond teams is mapping characters onto Magic\u2019s color pie<\/strong>. Well\u2011rounded characters in fiction rarely fit a single color: a hero who is clever, stubborn, compassionate or ruthless can plausibly be Blue, Red, White or Black at different points.<\/p>\n

    Designers handle that by creating multiple card versions of a single character that each capture a particular moment or aspect of their arc. That keeps individual cards simpler and makes them more approachable for new players, while still giving veterans options for deckbuilding.<\/p>\n

    At the same time, designers aim to make sure there are multi\u2011color legends available so fans can build coherent tribal or thematic decks. For example, a Red\u2011White dwarf lord that supports a Dwarf tribe helps bring previously released creatures into shared decks.<\/p>\n

    There\u2019s another recurring problem: many licensed worlds are naturally heavy on certain colors (heroes often map to White, villains to Black, clever archetypes to Blue), while Green<\/strong> \u2014 representing growth, nature, or community \u2014 can be thinly represented. In The Hobbit, elves and bears helped fill the Green lane; in other franchises, finding what Green means can make or break the set\u2019s balance.<\/p>\n

    What designers are balancing<\/h2>\n

    <\/p>\n

      <\/p>\n
    • Faithfulness to the source material versus mechanical clarity.<\/li>\n

      <\/p>\n

    • Immediate player experience (simplicity, fun Limited play) versus long\u2011term franchise stewardship.<\/li>\n

      <\/p>\n

    • Color distribution to enable satisfying deck archetypes across a set.<\/li>\n

      \n<\/ul>\n

      These trade\u2011offs affect how interesting a set is at draft tables, how collectible certain cards become, and whether characters appear in colors that match player expectations.<\/p>\n

      What\u2019s next \u2014 and what it means for players<\/h2>\n

      <\/p>\n

      Verhey confirmed a steady slate of Universes Beyond projects and cross\u2011overs inside Wizards\u2019 other flagship property, Dungeons & Dragons. World of Warcraft and Star Wars collaborations for D&D are already public, and Wizards is exploring how those same partnerships might appear across both tabletop lines.<\/p>\n

      On the Magic side, upcoming releases include Star Trek<\/strong>, a set Verhey said will experiment with a new mechanic called Dilemmas<\/strong> to mimic the hard choices characters face. He hinted limited play could feel different because many Star Trek stories emphasize conflict resolution and moral decisions more than direct combat.<\/p>\n

      And for the Commander community, the event\u2011only Mystery Booster Commander Edition is already delivering unusual, format\u2011defying cards and callbacks to Magic\u2019s past \u2014 cards Verhey is highlighting on his channel ahead of MagicCon Atlanta.<\/p>\n

That means beloved moments from a franchise may appear first, later, or not at all \u2014 and when they do, designers will aim to present them in ways that fit Magic\u2019s rules and the expectations of both new and longtime players.<\/p>\n
