The Fighting Hawks hold a 1-5 record in FCS playoff history with their lone victory coming during the pandemic-altered 2020-21 spring season against Missouri State. UND last made the playoffs in 2023 when they lost 42-35 at home to Sacramento State.

North Dakota stumbled in their regular season finale, falling 34-31 in overtime to South Dakota State last weekend. The Fighting Hawks led 20-7 late in the third quarter but couldn’t hold on, allowing SDSU to force overtime and win on a 23-yard touchdown pass. First-year Head Coach Eric Schmidt leads a balanced team that went 5-3 in the MVFC conference.

Key Storylines for Today’s Playoff Clash

Tennessee Tech enters this matchup with tremendous momentum, winning 15 straight games before their loss to FBS Kentucky in Week 12. The Golden Eagles bounced back to finish the regular season strong, including a dramatic comeback from 10 points down to defeat UT Martin 20-17 with a 35-yard field goal with 11 seconds remaining.

Senior linebacker Theron Gaines anchors Tennessee Tech’s defense and is a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award, given to the nation’s best defensive player. Gaines has recorded 86 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, and 6.5 sacks while also scoring two defensive touchdowns. The 6-foot-1, 237-pounder leads a defense ranked 2nd nationally in rushing defense, critical against a North Dakota team that relies on balanced offensive attack.

North Dakota Head Coach Eric Schmidt brings defensive expertise to Grand Forks after spending his career in that capacity. This marks only the second time Tennessee Tech has hosted an FCS playoff game in school history. Their previous playoff appearance came in 2011 when they hosted Central Arkansas and lost 34-14. The Golden Eagles will move to the Southern Conference starting in 2026, making this their final year in the OVC-Big South.

Coach Bobby Wilder was named OVC-Big South Coach of the Year and AFCA Region 2 Coach of the Year. Days before the playoffs began, Tennessee Tech announced Wilder signed a five-year contract extension through 2030. The focus remains on creating a strong home atmosphere for today’s game, though Tucker Stadium is currently undergoing a $30 million renovation, with all fans seated on the east side.
