Steam machine: firmware update and 1TB storage trick turn a middling console into a contender

Valve’s Steam Machine arrived this year as an ambitious attempt to bring a PC-sized Steam library to the TV, but early impressions were blunt: expensive, rough around the edges and often unable to sustain smooth frame rates. After several weeks of steady firmware and software patches — most notably support for AMD’s latest scaling tech — the device has become markedly more usable for living-room play, though serious limitations remain.

Midlife software fixes matter

What shifted the conversation was the addition of FSR 4.1 (also called FSR Redstone) and a string of stability improvements from Valve. These updates address two of the Steam Machine’s early weaknesses: erratic frame pacing and image artefacts that made demanding games jittery on the couch.

For some titles the upgrade is straightforward: games that expose FSR 4.1 in their menus simply switch to the new mode. For others you can get the benefit by toggling the compatibility to Proton Experimental in Steam’s game properties — a small download then enables the improved scaling and frame generation.

Real-world gains — a quick look

I tested two demanding games that highlight the change. The improvements aren’t night-and-day in raw frames per second, but they significantly tighten the lower-end performance and remove blocking stutters that previously harmed gameplay.

Those +3–6 FPS gains are useful, but the bigger win is a much stronger 1% low and noticeably better frame pacing — the difference between an elastic-feeling framerate and a consistent, playable experience.

Textures and visual stability also improve; games that used to show intermittent shimmering or “fizzling” surfaces now render far more cleanly, which changes the subjective feel of gameplay more than the raw numbers suggest.

Storage trade-offs and a practical workaround

Hardware weaknesses remain, chief among them price and storage. The Steam Machine’s top-tier builds are costly, and the base model’s limited internal drive fills quickly once modern titles are installed.

The most pragmatic fix I found is to buy the base unit and add a high-speed microSD card. I tested a Lexar PLAY microSDXC alongside the internal SSD: the card is much cheaper per terabyte and, while slower, delivers acceptable load times without stuttering in-game.

The card adds measurable load-time overhead (roughly several seconds per mission), but no obvious in-game hitching on the titles I tried. For many users the capacity gain and lower cost will outweigh the slower mission loads.

  • Immediate benefit: Smoother gameplay and fewer visual artefacts in supported games thanks to FSR 4.1.
  • Compatibility tip: Use Proton Experimental to enable the new scaling for older titles that don’t expose it natively.
  • Storage hack: A 1TB microSD card offers far better value than internal upgrades at the moment, at the expense of longer load times.

Where the Steam Machine stands now

Price still bites. For buyers focused purely on frames-per-dollar, assembling a custom compact PC or choosing a conventional console remains the smarter financial decision. The Steam Machine’s hardware specs don’t present a clear advantage on paper.

But Valve’s software work has changed the practical story: the system that felt rough and overpriced at launch is becoming a competent alternative for players who want Steam’s ecosystem on a TV without dealing with a desktop OS on the couch. USB wheel and pedal support, clearer resolution controls and general stability tweaks all add up.

So is it a must-buy? Not yet for everyone. But for a specific group — people who value Steam’s library on the big screen and prefer a plug-and-play living-room experience — the device is now a credible option worth considering, especially if you accept the storage-for-cost compromise.

Long term, performance will depend on both further software iteration from Valve and how aggressively competing manufacturers price comparable living-room PCs. For now, the Steam Machine has moved from an underwhelming first effort to a promising, progressively refined platform.
